A Quick History of Weapons of Mass Destruction

In 1932, Canada founded a non-governmental association in which its purpose was to help with the well-being and efficiency of the Canadian army, as well as give advice to the government on Canada's defence policy. The association is known today as the Conference of Defense Policy (CDP).

Some believe that nuclear deterrence is a vital component in world peace and security, while others think of the consequence and the danger to mankind. One major reason for countries not to use nuclear weapons is if one country uses nuclear weapons against another, it will retaliate, thus creating a stalemate. This situation of assure mutual destruction kept the two super powers USA and USSR from destroying each other throughout the Cold War era.

The UN is trying to reduce the amount of weapons of mass destruction but the pace is moving very slowly. Canada is in a situation were in which it wishes to have global disarmament of nuclear weapons, but to make a policy on disarming of nuclear weapons could become a problem with their allies. The US, one of Canada's biggest allies, is dependent on nuclear weapons as part of their national security strategy. So by trying to disarm nuclear weapons, Canada would be putting the US's security strategy in jeopardy.
