The first three murals done in 1986 were painted by local artists. After 1986, the contest was more widely advertised and one artist came from as far as British Columbia. Before a new mural is painted, a juried competition is held for professional artists. The artists are required to sign an agreement with the Village. Wall owners sign a lease agreement which is registered at the Land Registry Office. The walls are spray washed and minor repairs are made before the artists start to paint. Brick, tin, aluminum siding and concrete walls have been used to date. Artists are paid a flat fee per mural. All their supplies, such as paint, brushes, thinner, air brushes and scaffolding, are supplied by the Village. However, the artist is responsible for personal expenses such as accomodations and meals. The latest mural is an exception to this, as the mural was completely financed by the owners of The Mural Cafe, this included the supplies. Currently, there have been ten artists for the thirteen murals. Cathie McGuire, Andrea Green, Lorrie Maruscak, John Hood, Noreen Mallory, Dan Sawatzky, Sheila Ballantyne and Sergio Lopes, Mary Lynn Baker and Pierre Hardy. Mary Lynn Baker and Pierre Hardy have done three each.
