"THE VILLAGE BANDSTAND"

Completed by John Hood in 1987, this 48' X 13 1/2' mural depicts the band and the bandstand as seen from the south, with the then new Model School in the background, C. 1925. The scene is located on the west wall of Nancy's Video Plus, 29 Main Street East.

The time is about 8:30 on a summer evening. The Ford car and the old couple on the left are drawn from references in Edna B. Chant's book Athens Was Her Home.

The bandstand was built in 1924, through the efforts of the Athens Women's Institute and concerts were held here, with band members proudly displaying their trim uniforms and shiny instruments.

Young and old alike gathered to enjoy the talents of these local musicians, as marching tempos or relaxing medleys echoed out on a peaceful summer night.

John Hood, born in Montreal, Quebec, graduated from Concordia University, Montreal, with his B.F.A. and has had several one-man shows. He is the son of artist Noreen Mallory and author Hugh Hood and has spent summers at the family cottage at Charleston Lake. John now resides in Toronto.
