MAIN
STREET
This mural, by Andrea Green, is located on the east wall of the Stedman's Store, 7 Main Street East, and was completed in 1986.
"This mural is an illusion of Athens life then (or now) - A life size image that people would feel able to walk right into." Andrea succeeds in capturing this slice of 1910 life on the Main Street in her 96' X 25' mural. Thirty-nine true-to-life people, painted from old photographs and Edna B. Chant's books, fills the board sidewalks in front of Centre Block to watch the Orange Day Parade.
One day shortly after the mural was completed, an elderly gentleman visiting from the U.S., walked the length of the mural. When he spotted the little boy in the deerskin suit, he called back to his wife, "Come here and see this! I'm in this picture!" Sure enough, the images accurately rendered triggered recognition and memories of growing up in Athens over 75 years ago. "That" says Andrea "is public art at its best - about the people, for the people, making the people remember and feel proud."
Andrea has her B.A. in Fine Art from the University of Western Ontario,
with further studies at the Ontario College of Art. She has been teaching
for a number of years at St. Lawrence College, Brockville. She and her
husband Doug, and their four children have also created Simple Gifts Farm
Greenhouses on the Oak Leaf Road, west of Athens.
