"TRAIN STATION"

The "Train Station", on the east wall of Athens Pro Hardware, 34 Main Street East, is 96' X 26', and was painted by Lorrie Maruscak in 1986.

Between 1888 and 1952, the words "Here comes the train" were heard daily, announcing the arrival at the Athens station of the B & W (Brockville-Westport).

This mural has revived memories of fashionable women in their stylish hats, leg-of-mutton sleeves and long skirts. A horse-drawn taxi from the Armstrong Hotel waits to take passengers to downtown Athens.

The train brought increased prosperity to the area. Fresh produce could now be shipped out and freight could be received daily by merchants and farmers. Livestock pens were also located near the station.

Lorrie Maruscak was born in Kitchener, but came to this area at an early age. While attending Athens District High School, she created two large indoor murals on the school walls. In 1986 she graduated from Sheridan College in Brampton.

Lorrie is now a resident of Kanata, but still visits Athens.

During early summer of 1993, she touched up faded and damaged areas of her mural.
