"CHARLESTON LAKE PICNIC"

Noreen Mallory has presented the dazzling beauty of a perfect summer day at Charleston Lake, C. 1915. The mural, painted in 1987, is located on the west wall of Athens Meats, 17 Main Street East, and is 61' X 23'.

Athens residents Crawf Slack, Jennie Lamb and others are enjoying a peaceful picnic, while children swim in the calm bay waters and fishing guides prepare a mouth-watering shore dinner of freshly caught Lake Trout. The Charleston steam launch rides gently in the water, waiting for the passengers return to Charleston Village. Squirrels, chipmunks, birds and a snake, natural inhabitants of the lake, add to the serenity and beauty of a hot, lazy day.

Noreen Mallory is a native of Brockville, but has resided in Montreal for a number of years. She is married to noted author Hugh Hood and they and their four grown children have spent their summers at their cottage at Charleston Lake.

She has had numerous showings of her work in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick, and has also taught at St. Lawrence College. She is a talented set, costume and prop designer, having worked for the Stratford Shakespearean Festival, Jupiter Theatre, Crest Theatre, and C.B.C. Television, as well as designing covers for publications such as the Montreal Star. Noreen is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art, with further studies at the School of Beaux-Arts, Montreal Concordia University and the Winchester School of Art.
