"THE OLD HARTLEY SAW MILL,
SPRINGTIME AT LAST"

This mural, painted by artist Pierre Hardy, is displayed on the north wall of the H & R Feed & Pet Supplies building, located at 5 Victoria Street. The mural covers 640 square feet and is 16 feet high by 40 feet long. It was painted in 1988.

In this mural, the action takes place in the lumber yard of the Hartley Saw Mill. It's very early in the morning. It's springtime! It's that time of year when farmers are busy repairing winter damages to their barns and homes. The mill's production is at its peak.

In order to render the early morning mood, the artist chose to use blue tonalities in the background. In the foreground, a medallion in the shape of a typical saw blade adds to the theme. The colour scheme found within the medallion if of a warmer quality, as the action takes place later in the day. A farmer has just bought some planks and beams and is taking the load back to his farm where helpers are already working on the repairs. The lower banner is a visual extension of the actual lawn found along the wall and accentuates the quality of depth in the mural.
