TURKEY FAIR DAY

This 87' X 30' mural, painted in 1986 by Mary Lynn Baker, is located on the west wall of Athens Food Town, 2 Main Street East, and depicts that special day of by-gone years known as Turkey Fair Day.

Early in December of each year, buyers came from larger centres to Athens (Farmersville) to purchase poultry from the local farmers. They then resold the poultry to distant city customers.

Buyers, or agents dressed in long white coats, inspected the wagon loads of turkeys, and after making a decision, the farmers were directed to a weighing/distributing area, where they received payment.

Artist Mary Lynn Baker researched every detail of costume, shoes, boots, childrens' clothing and horse harnesses at Upper Canada Village. The colours of the store fronts as well as the clothes and the sleigh robes are to the period as well.

The Ottawa born artist now lives in this area and her work is represented in National and International Collections. She has been a teaching master at St. Lawrence College, Brockville, for the past few years, and has taught courses in Museum Design also. She is trained in cartographic drafting and has also studied in Wales.

Ms. Baker's works are shown at Heritage Crafts in Brockville, as well as in Toronto and Ottawa.
